HitMeApp

Privacy Policy

HitMeApp helps a group of friends pick a place to meet. It has no accounts, logins, or email, and asks for nothing that identifies you: in each session you get a random member id, kept in your own browser, and a themed name you can change. The members of a session see your name, your shape, your votes, and your chat messages.

Your location

To find places that work for everyone, HitMeApp uses your precise location, which you share in one of three ways: your device's GPS (only when you tap to use it), an address you type, or a pin you drop on the map. You can change it at any time.

Ghost mode is on by default. While you are a ghost, the other members of your session never see your pin, only that you have set a location, and your location still counts toward where the group searches: others see the spots we find, never your pin. Because those spots lie somewhere between the members, others may guess the general area you are in, at a neighborhood scale. Turn ghost mode off and the members of your session see your pin and the label you gave it.

The center of the group's search area is computed only on our server; it is never shown or sent to any member.

When you type an address, our server asks Google to look it up and shows the matches only to you. We do not store them: your pin's label is the text you typed.

After the group decides, you can share your trip to the spot. While you share it, the group sees your live position, even if you were a ghost; stopping restores your ghost setting, and turning ghost mode on ends the sharing. Your device asks Google for your route, and the route and your arrival time stay on your device.

How long we keep it

Session data — locations, votes, venues, chat — is deleted 24 hours after a session is created (within 15 minutes of expiry). If our database host pauses the project for inactivity, only the anonymous session statistics and internal counters can wait, unserved, until we restore it, which we do within 24 hours of the notice.

Anonymous statistics

For each session we keep one anonymous statistics row: how many people joined, the theme it started with, whether and how quickly the group decided, whether the wild card was used, restarts, arrivals, and an approximate error count. It holds no location, no names or member ids, and no Google content, and it is deleted 13 months after the session was created. HitMeApp uses no other analytics.

Who processes your data

  • Supabase: our database and live updates, hosted in the US-East region.
  • Google Maps Platform: the map, the place cards (the Places UI Kit), and trip routes (the Routes library) run in your browser and connect to Google directly; our server also uses Google's Places and Geocoding services to find nearby places and to look up the addresses you type.

Your use of Google Maps features and content is subject to the Google Maps End User Additional Terms of Service and the Google Privacy Policy.

On your device

Your browser keeps your member id and session token for each session you are in (in its local storage), so you come back as the same member; clearing your browser's storage removes them.
